The main actors in this documentary are wild Westerwald residents. Some, such as red-backed shrikes and great crested grebes, have lived here for a long time, others such as wild cats, black storks and wolves have disappeared for a long time and are now reclaiming their old home - and some, such as the Egyptian goose, have recently moved in. Together they ensure rich diversity in a barren country.

The stone-rich low mountain range with its impressive basalt formations rises downstream from Koblenz on the right bank of the Rhine. Starting from the Rhine Valley at around 60 meters above sea level, it goes up to over 650 meters into the Hohen Westerwald. The climate is as varied as the locations. When the wind whistles so cold in early spring, the first flowers are already appearing down in the Rhine Valley.
